The FCC has granted a construction permit to the nonprofit Community Informatics Institute (CII) for a low-power FM (LPFM) radio station that will reach a 3.5 mile radius of Vienna. As a noncommercial educational community radio station, WVCI-LP Vienna will reach approximately 800 residents. LPFM permits have only been offered three times in the FCC’s history: 2000, 2013, and 2023. To put this development in context, WHCP radio applied as an LPFM station during the 2013 FCC filing period and is now a full-powered NPR station. The Vienna station must be up and running by February 7, 2027 (3 years from award date) or the FCC will take away the permit.
